When should I replace?

New technology will of course call on investment and more energy efficient products often command a premium. Opting for the cheapest option can appear to be the most cost effective choice, but choosing technologies to deliver immediate cost savings will often prove to be a false economy.
A higher value, but more energy efficient product will help to reduce energy costs, making it a more sound investment in the long term, as well as reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions. Qualification through the ECA scheme will make the product even more cost effective due to the accelerated tax relief available.
So what equipment should I be investing in?

Refrigeration IS the same thing as air conditioning. Central units are merely whole-house devices that force the air through ductwork, instead of having a little window unit in each room. I suspect the efficiency is similar, but you’ll probably be more comfortable with the whole house cooled. Central air conditioning can be gas or electric. I’m not sure that one is more efficient than the other, you’ll have to get cost information from someone that knows local prices.

Hi, I’ve been tortured by this hot weather since the beginning of summer and a/c hasn’t worked ever since I moved into my apt in March. I’ve called the office and they’ve sent the maintenance up several times to fix the air, in which each attempt fails after an hour of the a/c working and then blowing out air that isn’t even that cold. About the second time they’ve come back after me calling they discovered that the pipes were leaking. Well, they fixed the pipes supposedly, installed a new a/c unit, and filled it up with free-on which was what was leaking they said. Up until even know after their seventh attempt to stop the leaking it still keeps on leaking! He’s checked from the inside of the house and outside of the house unit. I’m dying here and I live upstairs which is worse because heat rises! I practically sleep naked with a fan that blows around hot air. What else could be the problem, or are they just not doing their job right?

The split A/c is not cooling. I called a tech and he changed a capacitor, charged freon and left. It worked fine for 3 days after that once again it stopped cooling. He did not check for leaks – simply said the unit needs to be replaced.

I like this kind but I can’t say how good they are. I like that they don’t take away your visual ability to look out the window. They have a fairly small intake / exhaust duct that is adjustable to fit average size windows.
There are 2 models. The next model up has heat as well. Price is not bad considering a window unit will probably cost more and won’t be easy to take out seasonally. These are is very portable. I’m sure they are energy star rated and plug into standard house current. I’m planning on buying one of these myself. See both links:

If you keep the AC unit (the big one) outside, it reduces the noise.
Most of the modern ACs have silent “inside parts” and loud “outside parts”.

No, where do you think the condensation would go? Right into the fireplace, don’t forget A/C draws the moisture out of the air and you will have water dripping out of the back side of the A/C.
