trane air conditioning?

Paco asked:

Replacing a 19-year old central air conditioning unit . The quote from Home Depot was $20K for 3 Ton SEER 16 Trane unit (all work and warranties). This seems outrageously high, but they would not leave paperwork behind to justify this cost.
- Can you help. Rough idea of equipment costs and labor.

I see equivalent Goodman units online for less than $2K. I know this is an inferior equipment and it uses Freon, but I don’t have a good idea how to adjust for better equipment. The high end manufacturers do not put their prices on-line.

It is in Las Vegas and a 2000 sq. foot house with high ceilings. But this estimate was for one of two units.

Is this a split system, or a package unit? Either way, 20k is high. Assuming it’s a package unit, with electric heat, a package unit shouldn’t cost more than 2 or 3 k, as long as there’s no special install circumstances. If ducting also needs replaced, it’ll up the cost by anywhere from 1k for a couple of adapters to 10k+ if the whole house needs redone. I’m kinda shootin’ from the hip here, but 20k does sound awful high for a 3 ton system.
    Good luck

I agree with the ac tech.20k seems way high. Price a few more. Most all ac equipment will last a long time and probably get 10 year warranty. Don’t worry much about the freon issue. It will be available for a long time. Might go up in price a little in it need to be added. It will only need to be added in a leak problem. It is not just “used”. Freon is a brand name. It is called refrigerant. New units will be allready upgraded to newer refrigerants that are readily available.

This price is way out of line go to my web site and i have prices for systems installed and none of them come near 20k.
you have a two zone systems and at 2000sq ft home you need a total of around 4 tons both systems should be the same size if house is split in half.
