Vertical Air Conditioner
Installing a vertical air conditioner can be tricky, but the installation is really a relatively simple project. Completing this type of installation alone can be a rather difficult task, so having some reliable assistance throughout the project can make a big difference. You can make the vertical air conditioner installation run more smoothly by:
Having the correct tools for the job; this is the best way to be set for success when doing any type of installation. Making sure that a secure framework already exists around the window prior to adding more support. Ensuring that solid wood products such as plywood are used frame the existing window.
Before beginning, it’s important to make sure that the unit itself will be supported properly by a stable and solid framework. Window air conditioning units can be quite heavy. The framework of the window alone is not enough to support this heavy equipment; reinforcements are required for optimum stability. Therefore, building a solid support that extends out underneath the window is a good idea.
To prepare the window for the installation, use a saw to shape the plywood to the same size as the open window. Within the plywood, cut a square hole exactly the same size as the air conditioner. Mount the finished plywood into the window and secure it with wood screws. Some techniques for doing this type of installation employ the use of wood glue. However, wood glue is not necessary if the appropriate framework has been constructed to support the weight of the vertical air conditioner unit.
Many of these units come with some type of bracket that can easily be affixed to the newly created plywood framing. However, be prepared to come across some units that do not come with any type of bracketing equipment. If the unit you’ve selected does not include a bracket, then you will need to manufacture a support that will connect the unit to the new framework. This can be easily done using wood that is commonly found at lumberyards.
Positioning the vertical air conditioner unit into the framework is probably the most difficult part of the installation. This is where having some assistance is not only helpful, but most likely necessary. One the unit has been hoisted into position, apply some form of sealant or caulking to ensure an airtight seal is formed around the unit. This will prevent dirt, insects, water, and any unwanted drafts from entering through the cracks. Once completed, it is only necessary to plug in the newly constructed air conditioner and make sure there is no vibration that may cause damage to the upper portion of the existing window.
